Community Health Center of Lubbock provides crucial services to nearly one in ten residents in the northwestern Texas community, who otherwise would go without healthcare. The organization began in 1992 as a single site serving 9,000 patients and now reaches more than 26,000 people at eight clinics within the city and two mobile units serving people in five counties. Services include everything from preventative checkups and eye exams to prenatal care, sports physicals, and adult and pediatric dentistry.
Providing Healthcare for People Without Access
Community Health Center of Lubbock relies on grants for 60% of its operational funding to keep providing healthcare programs within the community.
Finance Director Barbra Moore uses Blackbaud’s solutions to streamline financial processes and accurately report financial data for multiple clinics, departments, and grants. Partnering with Blackbaud to save time and money helps Community Health Center of Lubbock land more grant funding and, in turn, serve more people in need.
“We have actually been able to expand some of our locations, expand services, and extend medical services with later evenings and services to women that weren’t there before,” Moore said.
Making the Most of Grant Funding
Community Health Center of Lubbock invested in Blackbaud accounting software designed with organizations like the Texas clinics in mind. Moore led the transition to Financial Edge® five years ago. She immediately recognized the value of the visual chart organizer (VCO), which intuitively applied grant coding structures.
“The VCO is an amazing tool that allows you to quickly adjust how you want to run your reports,” Moore said. “In any organization, no account structure is 100% complete on initial build. Once you have created your account codes, the VCO allows you to validate your statements to make sure they’re picking up everything you have coded,” explained Moore.
Applying for grants can be complicated to navigate, and the stakes are high; access to lifesaving care for tens of thousands of people hangs in the balance. An all-inclusive fund accounting solution, Financial Edge sorts through the minutiae for Moore and positions Community Health Center of Lubbock to receive more funding by providing the cleanest, most accurate data to grantmaking organizations.
“It rolls up into one big income statement, but I can always segment it out—and it gives you very detailed information,” Moore said. “The better we report out to our foundations and our grants, the more money we are likely to get to serve those communities that we’re working for.”
Transitioning to Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT
Community Health Center of Lubbock will soon migrate its solution to Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT, Blackbaud’s flagship cloud fund accounting software, which will allow Moore to manage transactions and eliminate manual processes within a secure environment. She already anticipates some major improvements with the switch to this intuitive, purpose-built cloud solution:
- No downtime due to internal delays
- The ability to access data anytime, anywhere
- Dashboards that provide data at hand
- The ability to bypass the unnecessary process of waiting for reports
- Information that is easy to share with non-financial users
Moore also takes heart in the fact that her organization’s continued partnership with Blackbaud helps to power more social good, both in northwestern Texas and around the world.
“It allows me to continue giving back,” Moore said. “The fact that it’s built for nonprofits—I know we’re giving back to Blackbaud every day, which is giving back to everyone else. So, it’s just a holistic kind of thing.”
